Dear families,
On Tuesday a group of 8 students represented our school at the Interschool Cross Country event at Chairo School in Drouin. The following students participated:
Reconciliation
One of the most important things that we do in a school year is to prepare our students to celebrate the Sacraments. Presently we are preparing students in Gr 3 for Reconciliation. Ethan Jamieson, Maycee Shankar and Billy Deppeler will celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The program includes:
- parent & child workshop tonight at 4pm or 7pm
- Commitment Mass Sat June 11 6pm St John's Church
- Celebration of the Sacrament Thurs 23rd June 5pm St John's Church Trafalgar
This is a very special time for these students and their families. We pray that you listen to the learning in this program and that you allow it to change your life.
Communication
Our main platform for communication to families is through PAM. We use Class Dojo for photos, as we cannot put lots of photos on PAM. Class Dojo is really for communication with your class teacher, not for communication with me. If you would like to ask me something then please email me. pmulqueen@trafalgar.catholic.edu.au I check my emails regularly but I do not check messages in Class Dojo, as I said, this is for your class teacher only.
Newsletters are emailed to you and you can always find the newsletter on our website www.trafalgar.catholic.edu.au
School Reports
Each term we provide a formal opportunity for reporting to families:
Term 1: Parent/teacher conversations early in the term.
Term 2: Written reports will be availabe electronically on PAM on June 22nd. If you need a printed copy then please request this through your child's class teacher.
Term 3: Parent/teacher/student interviews in week 6 August 17th.
Term 4: Written reports at the end of the school year.
Of course if you would like to chat to your child's teacher any time, you are very welcome. Please just organise a time that suits you both.
Pokemon cards are fun to trade and can cause lots of issues in schools. Rather than banning the cards completely from school, we have decided to demonstrate to the students that we are working together respectfully, so instead we have decided to introduce 'The Pokemon Club'. This club will only operate on Fridays in Term 2, as a trial. The idea is that if you are especially interested in Pokemon Cards that you could bring them to school on a Friday and go to the Gr 2/3 classroom at lunchtime, where you can play with them and trade them with an adult supervising. The hope is that with an adult supervising there is far less chance of an unfair trade happening. Of course, the trade will still be the student's responsibility but the adult can certainly ask questions about the fairness of the trade. We want to teach the students to be responsible for their actions and decisions and support them in the process.
May God continue to bless and guide us in our learning together,
Trish Mulqueen
National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
Between 27 May and 3 June every year, Australia celebrates National Reconciliation Week (NRW) which marks two significant milestones in Australia's Reconciliation journey:
- This year, 27 May acknowledges the 55th anniversary of the 1967 referendum where more than 90% of voters gave the Commonwealth the power to make laws for Aboriginal people, and for Aboriginal people to be recognised in the national census. It was Australia’s most successful referendum.
- This year, 3 June acknowledges the 30th anniversary of the 1992 landmark decision by the High Court of Australia that overturned the legal doctrine of ‘terra nullius’ and led to the creation of the Native Title Act 1993 and subsequent native title regime. The case was led by Torres Strait Islander man, the late Eddie (Koiki) Mabo and his fellow plaintiffs including the late Rev David Passi and the late James Rice.
Last week on Friday the whole school went on an excursion to St Mary’s Cathedral in Sale. It was a wonderful day. Deacon Mark who works in the Cathedral Parish lead us in prayer and dance and song. He was so much fun and it was great to see the students celebrating being in the church. Taryn put a short video on School Story on Class Dojo, if you haven’t watched it already, you might enjoy it. Thank you to Taryn and Michele for organising this great day.
After this celebration, Peta Murray from the Catholic Education Office in Warragul did a short presentation on linking Aboriginal culture and our Catholic Story. It was very informative and interesting. She presented this Aboriginal Our Father while a number of students kept the beat with rhythm sticks. I have included this Our Father for your knowledge. We are going to use this prayer/song in our future liturgies.
‘Spread the Good News’
Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Sale will celebrate Catholic Education Week from May 27 to June 3, 2022. Catholic Education Week is an opportunity to celebrate the ethos of Catholic schools and highlight the inspiring life of Catholic schools today.
The Diocese of Sale covers 38 Catholic primary schools and seven Catholic secondary schools in south east Victoria from Narre Warren and Cranbourne in the west, Wonthaggi and Philip Island in the south, to Orbost in the east.
Ms Maria Kirkwood, Director of Catholic Education for the Diocese of Sale said Catholic Schools were flourishing as more families looked for an affordable, quality, faith-based education for their children:
“After two years of COVID disruptions punctuated by lockdowns, remote learning and social distancing, our schools are looking forward to celebrating their achievements through activities, events, and open days following COVID-safe guidelines.”
“This year’s theme for Catholic Education Week, is ‘ Go Out into the World and Spread the Good News to all Creation' ( Mark 16:15), and our schools are currently living this call in many ways.”
“The theme also reflects the core purpose of Catholic education which is to nurture the potential of each child, and develop their knowledge and skills to become compassionate and contributing members of society.”
“I hope that staff, students, families and parishes enjoy this special time and that our schools continue to be places where children are able to reach their full potential.
“Catholic Education Week is a highlight of the year for the Diocese of Sale, as the broader Catholic education community comes together to celebrate our Catholic identity and unique mission,” Ms Kirkwood said.
Marist Sion Addams Family Production
Next week on Wednesday our Gr 4/5/6 students will travel to Marist Sion College in Warragul to watch the College's production of 'The Addams Family'. The performance is at 11am and it is a great opportunity for our students to see the College and be introduced to secondary schooling. If you are looking for a nice family outing, you might consider supporting the Marist Sion College production.
Resilience, Rights, Respectful, Relationships (RRRR) Program
In Respectful Relationships, we have started to learn about our Personal
Strengths. We are learning that personal strengths are different to our talents.
Talents are the things that we are good at but our personal strengths are the
gifts we use to do good for ourselves and for others. We are learning that
Personal Strengths impact on the way we contribute to team work situations
and to the way we interact with each other. Personal Strengths can include
qualities such as creativity, thoughtfulness, loyalty, honesty, fairness, etc.
These strengths complement our School Wide Expectations as we strive to be
respectful, resilient, inclusive team workers here at St Joseph’s School.
